We are currently seeking candidates for the position of Project Director for an anticipated 5-year $20 million USD program funded by the LEGO Foundation. 

The program is expected to focus on improving comprehensive teacher professional development in Kenya’s refugee hosting counties, empowering key stakeholders surrounding teachers, and generating and using evidence on the impacts of high-quality teacher professional development (TPD) and systems support. 

This position will be based in Nairobi and is contingent upon award.

The Project Director will provide leadership and oversight for a consortium of international and national partners with a focus on managing project timelines, budgets, and deliverables, ensuring compliance with national regulations, FHI 360 policies, and donor requirements, and fostering a safe and equitable working environment. 

The Project Director will be the primary liaison with the funder, government and UN officials, and other key stakeholders. He or she will be expected to identify challenges and risks and work with other key personnel to adapt programming in a complex operating environment.

Job Description:

Responsible for the overall direction, planning, implementation, and management of the project as well as the achievement of the goals and objectives in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Oversee a team of senior technical and operational staff and ensure strong communication and coordination with and between all team members.

Manage partnerships and ensure strong lines of communication and collaboration are established and maintained.

Oversee the planning of all project activities and set high quality performance targets ensuring adherence to technical standards, best practices, and donor guidelines.

Oversee strategies and interventions to ensure excellence and accountability to beneficiaries and LEGO Foundation.

Represent the project internally and externally to donors, stakeholders, implementing partners and government and UN counterparts.

Produce and present papers at local, regional, and international fora to share experiences and emerging best practices.

Ensure financial and grants management compliance with FHI 360 and LEGO Foundation rules and regulations.

Ensure timely, high-quality, and complete submission of work plans, quarterly and annual reports, financial reports, and any other reports required by LEGO Foundation.

Promote sustainability of the project activities through linkages to other programs, integration with national TPD systems, tools and materials, and capacity building of project staff and local stakeholders.

Coordinate with FHI 360 HQ teams on management and technical oversight and support.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in public administration, international development, education, economics, or a related field from an accredited university; Masters and/or Ph.D. preferred.

Minimum of 12 years of experience managing complex donor-funded activities in challenging environments.

Minimum of 8 years in strategic leadership of line management positions.

Demonstrated ability to manage and support diverse teams in challenging environments.

Demonstrated experience leading consortia.

Strong knowledge of, and commitment to, gender and social equity.

Demonstrated leadership, organizational development, partnership-building, managerial, teambuilding and communication skills.

Proven ability to develop relationships and coordinate with government officials, UN agencies, civil society, and non-governmental organizations.

Previous experience leading large teacher professional development activities.

Previous experience supporting refugees in Kenya or other contexts is strongly preferred.

Previous experience working with the Kenyan Ministry of Education or Teacher Service Commission is strongly preferred.

Familiarity with Kenya’s Competency Based Curriculum, play based learning, MHPSS/SEL, and inclusion strongly preferred.

Fluency in English.
