Role Brief:

Brooke East Africa, an international animal welfare charity dedicated to improving the lives of working horses, donkeys, and mules, is seeking a passionate and transformational individual to join their team as a Community Development Officer.

 This position involves direct engagement with communities and implementing partners in Kenya and other Brooke East Africa operation countries. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in assessing community needs, implementing sustainable interventions, and promoting behavior change for the benefit of working equine animals and the communities that depend on them.

With a team of over 900 staff globally, including vets, animal welfare experts, and development specialists, Brooke works in collaboration with various stakeholders to alleviate the suffering of animals through treatment, education, research, and advocacy. 

The organization aims to create a world where working horses, donkeys, and mules can live free from suffering and enjoy a better quality of life.


Key Responsibilities:

- Assess and identify community capacity gaps, needs, and root causes related to equine husbandry, management practices, and socioeconomic factors.

- Develop and implement sustainable interventions to address identified gaps and needs, utilizing Brooke's Communities For Animals (C4A) tools.

- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, making necessary adjustments based on gathered information.

- Explore and implement innovative capacity building methods and techniques that are suitable for different community groupings and contexts, promoting sustainable behavior change.

- Strengthen community-based structures in target equine-owning communities to ensure the longevity of project interventions.

- Participate in identifying resource and material requirements for community engagement and contribute to their development.

- Prepare and deliver content during planned trainings, develop session plans, and conduct monitoring visits to ensure effective use of C4A tools.

- Actively support and participate in community engagement meetings, workshops, and initiatives organized by Brooke East Africa and its partners.

- Collaborate with other officers and provide support and input where necessary.

- Supply reports, information, and data to other parts of the organization as required.

- Actively contribute to team and staff meetings, enhancing organizational goals in community engagement.

Requirements:

- Bachelor's degree in community development, social studies, or a related field of study.

- Minimum of 5 years of field-based experience in community development, implementing sustainable and transformative approaches and tools.

- Proactive and innovative approach to addressing complex community needs.

- Competency in applying participatory community approaches.

- Strong planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting skills.

- Experience in adult learning facilitation, workshop planning, and execution.

- Excellent partnership-building, networking, collaboration, and representation skills.
